St. Luke’s Parish Profile
Where Faith Is Lived Gently and Deeply
Located in the heart of South Glastonbury, surrounded by orchards, tobacco barns, a village of shops and restaurants, and the steady rhythm of the Connecticut River Valley, stands St. Luke’s Church.
Hartford and surrounding communities are close by, connecting us to the broader life of church and society. It is a setting that invites reflection, openness and renewal.
For generations, people have walked through our doors carrying the ordinary and extraordinary moments of life — baptisms and farewells, new beginnings and long goodbyes, questions, gratitude, grief, and hope. And here, in this small parish, they have found something steady: prayer that shapes the heart, community that sustains the spirit, and the reassuring presence of Christ in bread and wine.
St. Luke’s is not large. We do not measure our life together in numbers. We measure it in relationships.
We know one another’s stories. We notice when someone is missing. We pray for each other by name.
Our Story
St. Luke’s has always been a church rooted in worship and strengthened by fellowship. Sunday Eucharist is the heart of our life together. Scripture challenges and comforts us. Music lifts us. The peace is exchanged not as a formality, but as a genuine sign of joy and friendship.
After the final blessing, we linger. Conversations unfold. Plans are made. Laughter is shared. Hospitality here is not a program — it is simply who we are.
Through changing seasons — both liturgical and cultural — this parish has remained faithful. We have adapted when needed, leaned on one another in uncertainty, and trusted that God’s work continues in small, faithful communities.
A Church of Shared Ministry
One of the quiet strengths of St. Luke’s is the depth of lay leadership. Ministry here is not confined to clergy. Members read, sing, pray, serve, visit, organize, and care for one another. The vestry is thoughtful and engaged. Decisions are made prayerfully and collaboratively.
We believe small churches are not lesser churches. They are intimate churches. We offer space to be known and to know others. We invite participation rather than observation.
For example, an AA Women's Group celebrated 40 years of meeting in our undercroft this year. We also host The Olive Branch in our parish house, which is a "free store" operated by the Department of Children and Families (DCF) that provides new toys, clothing, and school supplies to families in need.
At St. Luke’s, everyone is welcome.
Faith in Action
Our faith does not end at the church doors. We are attentive to the needs around us and respond with generosity and compassion. Whether through local outreach, quiet acts of service, financial support of wider ministries, or opening our doors to the community, we seek to live the Gospel in tangible ways.
Over the past year, we’ve celebrated the first South Glastonbury Hall of Fame awards, welcomed Jackie Ford from the Olive Branch to share stories of dignity and hope during Sunday service, hosted joyful gatherings like our Halloween Maze, the screening of The Hunchback of Notre Dame with live organ music, a performance by the Yale Slavic Chorus, the Glastonbury’s Got Talent show, our annual Christmas Fair, and our beloved Christmas Pageant.
We understand that even modest efforts, offered faithfully, are multiplied in God’s hands.
A New Chapter
As we look ahead, we do so with gratitude for our past and hope for our future. We are seeking a quarter-time Priest-in-Charge who feels called not simply to serve a parish, but to share life with a community.
We imagine a priest who will:
Encourage the gifts already present among us
Help us listen for where the Spirit is leading next
Break open scripture in ways that illuminate daily life
Preside at the altar with reverence and warmth
Sit at kitchen tables and hospital bedsides with compassion
This is a quarter-time position, thoughtfully structured to support sustainable ministry and healthy balance. We see this not as a limitation, but as an opportunity — a model of partnership between clergy and laity that reflects mutual trust and shared responsibility.
What We Offer
We offer a congregation ready to engage.
We offer steadiness, openness, and care.
We offer prayerful support for the priest who joins us.
We offer space — for creativity, for relationships, for listening.
Most of all, we offer the chance to serve in a place where ministry is deeply personal and genuinely collaborative.
An Invitation
If you are a priest who believes that small churches matter…
If you are drawn to sacramental worship and authentic relationships…
If you value shared leadership and sustainable ministry…
If you are ready to walk with a faithful community into its next season…
We invite you to begin a conversation with us.
